Project: extension of the road into Conag

The makers of the documentary film “The cradle of my soul’, Martin Zwitter and Mehmet Akbal have supported the road construction project in Conag with the donations which were collected during the film screening. For almost seven months in winter it is impossible to drive to Conag by car. The filmmakers have devoted themselves to alleviate the people’s needs, especially the old people’s needs, and have developed a project for the extension of the road. They have financed the project with the voluntary donations in return for the DVDs that they handed out. Just before the village the condition of the road was very dangerous, almost too narrow and steep for cars to drive through. The extension of the road was inevitable. The lower part of the road had to be supported by an almost 100 metres long stone wall, and this is only a small part of the project.

In the summer of 2006 the narrow strellen of the road up to the village entry was widened over a stretch of 1700 metres, during four days, with the crane that belongs to the Yayladere municipality and with the help of the mayor of Yayladere Hasim Akyürek. The uneven parts in the road were repaired and channels for the drainage of rain water were built. Still the road must be covered with crushed stone and strengthened and smoothed with cylinders. It will only then be possible for cars to drive into the village during the winter as well. A successful completion of the project to the village inhabitants means the end of hardship in winter. For the elderly and ill people who during winter can collect their pensions nor do their shopping or visit a doctor, this is vital. For the people that have to carry people who are ill through the snow for two kilometres on their backs into the hospital in the district town, life is made a little easier, even though only a little.
